Purpose

The Director Corporate Controller is a key member of the finance leadership team that directs and develops the organization's international accounting principles, practices, procedures, initiatives and controls. Ensures the preparation and analysis of all financial reports meet the needs of the organization and comply with all applicable regulations. Given the global landscape of the company, the Controller maintains an in-depth, and up to date knowledge and understanding of both US and international accounting principles, primarily IFRS standards. The Controller advises management of potential changes in accounting regulations or practices that may impact international operations and financial reporting and works to implement any necessary changes into the company’s financial results.

The Corporate Controller will oversee a high performing accounting team and ensure sound leadership and mentoring skills are demonstrated. They will have strong inter-personal skills and will have the ability to flex their management style to effectively manage down, across and up the organization. They must be able to partner with all functions across the organization; providing key financial insights, expertise and analysis to executive level and Board level individuals, including members of the Audit Committee. The Controller must be highly organized, results-driven and detail-oriented. The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer and manages 9 direct reports spanning multiple regions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Accounting and Reporting Expertise

  • Oversee consolidated monthly and quarterly financial close processes, including regional reporting close package submissions, consolidation activities, review of key areas of judgment and key general ledger account reconciliations to ensure the accurate and timely preparation of our consolidated financial statements.

  • Responsible for key technical accounting judgments and policies, including oversight, implementation and execution of new accounting guidance.

  • Collaborate with our internal teams to ensure relevant information is shared timely, including tax, treasury, FP&A, human resources, legal and others as needed.

  • Act as a key liaison to our external auditors, oversee management of our integrated audit and reviews, and manage external consultant relationships.

  • Present accounting content to the Audit Committee on at least a half year basis.

  • Oversee the Company's internal controls compliance, working to strengthen internal controls and ensure the control environment is operating effectively in a dynamic and scaling setting.

Leadership and Cross-Function Collaboration

  • Supervise a high-performing team of direct and indirect reports, including regional controllers and director of shared services.

  • Ensure team members remain motivated, challenged through learning opportunities and guided in their professional development with an effective coaching relationship.

  • Continue to evolve and develop an accounting infrastructure that will support the needs of the business and effectively scale with increased complexity.

  • Lead our team in solving key business issues, allowing team members space to create their own solutions and providing guidance and insight where needed.

  • Build strong relationships with cross functional partners, engage and offer valuable insight and serve as a positive representation of the broader accounting team.

  • Advise key business partners on accounting implications of various transactions including implications of new accounting pronouncements and related disclosures.

  • Direct teams of reginal controllers and other accounting professionals throughout the world.

  • Partner with the Tax team on major projects to streamline inter-company and transfer pricing accounting.

  • Partner with the HR team on issues associated with Global Payrolls and other key compensation projects.

  • As a member of the Pension Plan Committee partner with HR on key investment and plan issues.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of relevant experience required, including 5+ years in an accounting leadership capacity at a public company, preferably in the mining and/or exploration industries.

  • Bachelor or master's degree in accounting required.

  • CPA license required.

  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to express complex issues and recommendations to executive and Board leaders.

  • Excellent conflict management skills at all levels in the organization as well as an effective and resilient stress manager.

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel, including experience in using various systems such as Oracle, Hyperion Financial Management (HFM).

  • Prior employment at a Big 4 public accounting firm strongly preferred.

  • Experience managing a diverse team of CPA and non-CPA professionals required.

  • Global commercial energy and minerals industry experience strongly preferred.
